Fighting back against the Fast-Fashion Industry with Re.Sustain

"Fast fashion isn't free. Someone, somewhere is paying"
- Lucy Siegle

This time last year I was deep in the fashion blogger bubble, hungrily lapping at the teat of fast-fashion, modelling mass-produced garments, sipping champagne at fashion HQs and unflinchingly enjoying a sort of "Insta-fame" which today makes me cringe. A year later and that lifestyle has lost it's appeal. Since starting my new job handling fashion brands I've some to see the importance of quality and craftsmanship, ethics, sustainability. A conscience in the clothes I Buy.

Every single day I scroll through my Instagram, past the £20 "Must-Have" tops and the "Oh look its on sale AGAIN" dress. Past launch after launch of the "Festival edit," the "Summer edit," the "Garden party edit," the "BBQ edit" "Use my code for yet more money off,"  Buy Buy Buy. Disposable fashion has become so much a part of our norm that we don't even question it anymore. We devour it like we devour junk food, or avocado on rye. But behind all the glitz and glamour is the harsh reality that the clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world, second only to oil.

Didn't know that did you? That is because brands make it deliberately difficult for consumers to look past the posing and the undeniable raw sex-appeal that they beam through our screens to the real impact of the industry. They distract you with gloss and with glitter from the very ugly side of what they're doing to the people who buy their clothes, the people who make their clothes and the planet. But I for one cannot look away anymore.

Of course it's not all like that, there have always been brands with values but traditionally these brands have been labelled as dated or frumpy, passé and out of touch with the latest trends. However, new up and coming fashion brand Re.Sustain is looking to challenge the way that we as consumers see ethical clothing, with contemporary designs and exciting and innovative products at the forefront of sustainable production methods and brand integrity. Their cutting-edge collection covers both mens and womenswear styles across a range of T-shirts, sweatshirts and wovens and they have vowed to continue to increase their use and support of 100% certified organic cotton from raw material, though the manufacturing and production processes to labelling and dispatch.

Organic cotton is widely considered to be one of the most sustainable fibres for textile production as it is both natural and renewable, whilst avoiding harmful pesticides and chemical fertilisers. This method of production minimises environmental impact resulting is less soil contamination, less water contamination less greenhouse gas production. The cotton farmers themselves also benefit from an improved standard of living and a fairer wage

“We’re really excited to have created a product range supported by immaculate and sustainable credentials, delivered with absolute integrity.”

This means that when you buy a garment from a company such as Re.Sustain you are swimming against the tide of throwaway fashion, making strong fast stroke towards a better future for the Industry. I think that's what I love most of all about this brand, it is unafraid. Re.Sustain fills a huge gap in the market for clothing with a conscience that remains edgy and on-trend.

Overall, in the same way that we've seen a huge backlash against animal testing in the beauty industry I would love to see see people exhibiting similar principles when it comes to the clothes that they buy. I want to see people really thinking about their purchases instead of mindlessly throwing their money at the self-perpetuating world of fast, disposable fashion which is exploiting workers and choking our planet. I for one am going to be making smarter purchases this year, ones which may sit a little heavier on my wallet but far less so on my conscience.
